The Courage and Sacrifice of a Young American War Hero
Synposis
A powerful story about a heroic Jewish-American soldier who fought bravely on D-Day, was captured by the Nazis, died in their custody, and was buried in a mass grave with Nazi soldiers. While his family was notified that he was killed , his final resting place was unknown for nearly 80 years until he was identified and reburied with full military honors under a Jewish Star of David at the American cemetery in Normandy, France.
Operation Benjamin, a remarkable nonprofit organization, undertook a relentless investigation and ultimately identified and reburied him with full military honors in a Jewish service under a Jewish Star of David, the Magen David, at the Normandy American Cemetery in June 2024.
This year, as the world commemorates the 80th anniversary of VE day and the liberation of Hitler’s death camps, this story has all the elements of a powerful, unforgettable film: bravery, loss, forgotten history, larger than life characters, and the indomitable spirit of those who refuse to let the past be forgotten.
It is also a deeply Jewish story - one that reminds us, of the courage and sacrifice of the greatest generation of Jewish soldiers who fought side by side with other young Americans to defeat Nazism and tyranny.
In this age of rising antisemitism and disconnection from Jewish identity, Nathan Baskind’s legacy can inspire a new generation to take pride in who they are—and to understand the price that was paid for the freedoms that we all enjoy today.
